Carterton School children looking forward to having a venue large enough for their own performances and attracting visiting performers to their town have donated $500 to the Carterton Events Centre Trust to help build the Events Centre, to be built just a stone’s throw from the school.
Carterton School, Board of Trustees Chairperson, Sarah Smith said the board wanted to support the project because of the potential benefits to the school and the Carterton community. “The facilities included will provide some great opportunities for displays, performances and cultural events."
"We think it will be pretty good to have a stage for performances and enough seating for the school and families,” Alex Megaw and Simon Mazey, both aged 10.
"I believe the library facilities will add to our own school library plus performances here will reduce the need for buses and transport around the Wairarapa," said Tyler Clifton (13).
“It was lovely to receive the donation from Carterton School,” said Carterton Events Centre Trust Secretary, Kate Nolan. “Schools fight for every dollar they can get and for them to commit $500 shows a great deal of faith in the Centre.”
The school’s response is one of many in the community to a call for local fundraising to help build the multi-purpose community centre on Holloway Street.
Carterton Events Centre chairman, John Greenwood, said the trust welcomed any contribution, large or small. “There have already been some wonderful fundraising efforts and unsolicited donations by Carterton individuals and groups. Our fundraising efforts are ongoing and every bit will count.”
Mr Greenwood said the situation in Christchurch following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake last weekend reinforced the need for communities to have facilities which could act as emergency welfare centres. “The Carterton Events Centre will be able to do exactly that and while it is not built specifically for that purpose, it will have sound, modern facilities which will serve the district well in a time of need.” |
