A new generation of Carterton children will soon begin what could, for many, become a lifelong association with the district’s new multi-purpose community centre.
To help with the construction of its new home in the Carterton Events Centre, due to open next month, Carterton Plunket staff and families presented a cheque for $1,100 to Carterton Deputy Mayor Elaine Brazendale last week.
The donation was the proceeds of fundraising events including a sausage sizzle, garage sale and raffle of a home-made quilt and baby items. Plunket will also have its own engraved brick laid in the centre’s courtyard as part of the centre’s ‘buy a brick’ fundraising campaign.
“Plunket is excited about moving from its rental premises into the Events Centre which will provide new opportunities for collaboration between Plunket and other community groups,” Wairarapa Plunket clinical leader Joan Gibbs said. “This will be a wonderful way for Plunket to be ‘out there’ in the community providing support for families and ultimately improving the health of all children and their families.”
“It’s almost 10 years since the idea of this community centre was first discussed and Plunket has been in the picture since the beginning,” Elaine Brazendale said. “For me the exciting thing is that they’ve hung in there and will have their home as part of the new centre which will open up new opportunities for them.”
“The work that Plunket does is vital to support families bringing up young children in our community. I know the effort that goes into fundraising by people with young children and this donation was an amazing gesture which will benefit these children and many others totally.”
All of Carterton Plunket’s operations will take place from dedicated Plunket rooms in the new centre. A date for the move to the new centre is yet to be confirmed but Joan Gibbs said it would be as soon as possible after the centre is blessed and opened on 29 October.
