Dave Reynolds, a member of the Tararua Tramping Club, will lead a 4-hour loop with views of Putangirua Pinnacles, chosen to represent the Paths of the Dead in the third Lord of the Rings film, Return of the King. From the Pinnacles Carpark and campsite, we will walk up the streambed to the base of the Pinnacles and turn left onto the Ridge Walk Track. This track climbs steeply to the lookout. For excellent views of Palliser Bay and Lake Onoke, continue uphill from the lookout to a bulldozed track and turn left. It returns you to the coast 300 metres from the Pinnacles Road entrance. The streambed and beach have rocks with fascinating fossils (don’t remove from the reserve). The Pinnacles are a good example of “Badlands erosion”, consisting of a large number of earth pillars or hoodoos. There was a Māori defensive site above this area.

Location: Putangirua Pinnacles Campsite Equipment: Walking boots, jackets, warm clothing & water Length: Approx.: 3-4 hours Coordinating Club: Tararua Tramping Club
